Duration:

~15 hours

Clients:

Illustration class final project

Process:

During a brainstorming session, I came up with a good set of interesting words. I then chose my favorites and laid them out on paper to see how they reacted with one another. I sketched thumbnails based on my favorite combination of those words. I laid a loose composition of my favorite thumbnail down onto thick tagboard in pencil. I started filling dark areas in with ink, making multiple, progressively darker passes over the composition until the important shapes were defined. I gradually applied watered-down colored gouache. After the colors and shapes were in place, I went across important features of the painting with ink outlines to emphasize and sharpen forms.

Tools:

pencils, paintbrushes, lots of water, ruler

Challenges:

Using too much water in places caused the cardboard to erode slightly.
